"Minni & Morrow prevail in dramatic fashion at 80th Annual BC Match Play Title"

This past weekend, the 80th Anniversary of the BC Match Play concluded in style at the prestigious Vancouver Golf Club, crowning both Open and Net Match Play Champions!

Rooted in its tradition, the Vancouver Golf Club has been hosting notable golf championships since its inception in 1910, from the most prestigious golf tournaments in the pacific northwest (PNGA Championship, BC Amateur, BC Open) to two of the most exciting Canadian Women's Open titles (2012 and 2015) that launched the careers of two of the most prominent LPGA Golfers in Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson.

For the past three years VGT has been honored to carry on this rich tradition by hosting the final three matches of the BC Match Play, Western Canada's longest standing match play tournament (founded in 1946).

This year's Championship featured a total of 91 teams (182 players) attempting to qualify for the Round of 32 Open and Net Match Play tournament.  And after four weekend's and 5 rounds of matches, some that went incredible lengths (11 playoffs in round of 32 alone), two teams came out on top and they should be commended for their resilience and consistent play!

OPEN DIVISION CHAMPIONS

Jace Minni / John Morrow (Beach Grove Golf Club) - $5,000 Team prize
1 up win over
Daniel Campbell (Bellingham GCC) / Zach Olson (Chilliwack GC) - $3,000 team prize

This year's Open Finals went the distance and was as close a battle as I have seen in while.  Minni and Morrow took and early 1-up lead with Morrow's birdie on the first hole, only to be tied back up when both Campbell and Olson birdied the 5th.  The match remained tied through the front nine after some great shot-making from both teams, and neither team managing to capitalize on their birdie chances.  And if it were not for a beautiful chip-in for eagle on hole 10 from Minni, this match would likely have gone extra holes.

The Beach Grove pair of Minni and Morrow withstood the constant challenges from Campbell and Olson on the back nine, putting 2 balls in play on a majority of holes, and forcing the hand of Olson/Campbell to make a birdie coming in on arguably the toughest stretch of the golf course.

When Campbell's birdie bid came up short on 17, Minni had the chance to end the match right there with a 10 footer of his own.  But much like it had happened most of the day, his birdie slid by the hole and it would come down to the 18th hole to decide this match.

With his partner in a tough spot and likely making bogey, Minni clutched up a chip to gimme range for par, leaving it up to Bellingham's Daniel Campbell to decide whether this match would go to extra holes or not.  Campbell hit two beautiful shots inside 10 feet with a great look up the slope for birdie.  But like he had done 3-4 times this day, Campbell could not capitalize on his great shot-making, and his ball would slide over the cup's edge.  And with a huge sigh of relief,  Minni and Morrow were claimed the 80th BC Match Play Open Champions!

With the win, Minni and Morrow would take home the first place team prize of $5,000, while Campbell and Olson shared runner-up prize of $3,000.

With the win, Jace Minni would join another Minni on the 80-year trophy, joining 2-time Match Play Champion and father, Scott Minni and making for history as the first father-son's names to be etched on this historical piece of hardware.

NET DIVISION CHAMPIONS

Brendan Turner / Danny Horner (Ledgeview Golf Club)
2&1 win over
Lynden Voth / Jason Marcotte (Chilliwack, BC)

In the Net Division, Ledgeview's Brendan Turner & Danny Horner secured a number of confident victories along the way in the match play rounds, but came up against formidable opponents in Lynden Voth & Jason Marcotte from Chilliwack.  And with just 6 holes to play it appeared that Voth/Marcotte had a comfortable lead in this match.  But both Turner and Horner pressed on and brought some excellent play on the final 6 holes to close out the Net finals match on the 17th hole with a 2&1 victory over Voth/Marcotte to take home their own championship hardware.

Congratulations to both our Net and Open Division Champions and to all Match Play teams that advanced into the quarter-finals, earning a share of the $21,000 in prize money!! (included below)
